Roswell Defeats West Forsyth 21-17

CUMMING—The Hornets traveled to Cumming to take on the West Forsyth Wolverines Friday night and fought for a 21-17 win. The Hornet offense came out firing as junior quarterback Ethan Roberts completing a 35-yard pass to Jacob Jarrett at the West Forsyth two yard line. Two plays later senior running back Kamonty Jett powered the ball into the endzone for the touchdown. Kicker Brian Najar’s extra point gave the Hornets a 7-0 lead.
On West Forsyth’s first possession the Wolverines drove the ball into the red zone but the Hornet defense stiffened and senior defensive end Shaun Rosenquist blocked a 28 yard field goal attempt to end the drive.
The Hornet offense took over and used a balanced running and passing attack to drive the ball down the field. On second and ten from the Wolverine 20-yard line, junior tight end/receiver John Copenhaver took the ball to the endzone on an end around to put the Hornets up 14-0.
The Wolverines responded on their next possession with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Blake Whitfield to Casey Cowart to make it 14-7.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter with Ethan Roberts running it in from the two-yard line and the Blake Whitfield answering with a 47-yard touchdown pass Abraham Camara to end the half at 21-14.
The second half turned into a defensive battle with the only score coming on a Wolverine field goal in the third quarter. The Hornet defense had several critical stops in the second half to preserve their lead. On fourth and goal from the Roswell five-yard line, senior linebacker Doneiko Slaughter tracked down the Wolverine running back from behind to prevent the score. On the Wolverine’s final possession Doneiko Slaughter delivered another hard hit to quarterback Blake Whitfield knocking the ball loose. Linebacker Khaleed Mobley retuned the fumble to the West Forsyth 16-yard line. From there the Hornets ran out the clock to seal the win.
The Hornets finished the game with 376 total yards. Ethan Roberts completed 14 of 26 for 188 yards and Kamonty Jett lead all rushers with 118 yards on 22 carries with one touchdown. Jacob Jarrett lead all receivers with eight receptions for 126 yards.
The Hornets travel to archival Milton on Friday, September 14th. The Hornets and Eagle have played 64 times in the past with Hornets leading the series 37-25-1.
